State Schools Onstage 2014

More than 1,800 students from 115 schools throughout Queensland delighted audiences in the awe-inspiring tenth year anniversary production of Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 July 2014. The show featured highlights from the past nine years and showcased the amazing talents of students ranging from Prep to Year 12.

The show featured:

  • a 600-voice choir
  • the student James Morrison Creative Generation Big Band
  • a 65-piece student symphony orchestra
  • 600 dancers
  • 35 featured vocalists
  • student alumni.

The show began by showcasing the entire massed choir on the arena for a dramatic performance of Pirates of the Caribbean and CGEN Overture.

Our junior dance ensemble delighted the audience with their fun and colourful performance of Pharrell William's Happy.

Anna Johnston, returned to rework her spectacular pas de deux Let it Be, after first choreographing and performing the contemporary item in 2009 as a student. In 2014, the item included another 8 talented senior featured dancers and alumni.

The Sound of Music segment was once again a huge hit featuring special guest vocalist and David Kidd, along with the featured senior dancers from Ormeau Woods State High School and The Gap State High School, the senior dance ensemble and the junior dance ensemble.

Other highlights from the first half of show included our alumni orchestra performing Russian Sailors Dance, our 150-strong massed string orchestra on the arena for Explosive, Fletcher Blight impressing us with his skills on the cello in his stand-alone piece Hall of Fame and Bangarra Dance Theatre's Rekindling Program highlighting the importance of Indigenous arts with their performance of Our Spirit.

The first half of the show closed with an energetic performance of All Things, featuring more than 300 dancers from across Queensland.

The second half of the show was full of incredible moments beginning with internationally renowned jazz musician James Morrison AM (reminiscent of James Bond), entering the arena on a segway for a performance of Impossible Bond with the student symphony orchestra.

Chrislyn Hamilton, special guest vocalist amazed the audience with her incredible rendition of Skyfall with the big band.

The Great Gatsby segment was a highlight of the show featuring over 100 talented student dancers and singers in dazzling 1920's attire.

Our featured vocalist Keiarn Chesebro from Palm-Beach Currumbin State High School performed Walking in the Air on a giant swing, whilst Flipside Circus wowed the audience with their acrobatics. The Toowong State School Signing Choir's inspiring performance in World's Greatest and the special dedication of You Raise Me Up to the teachers and educators from across Queensland who helped make Creative Generation (CGEN) what it is today were also highlights.

Finally, the entire 2014 cast came together to close Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage with Shout.

What an incredible way to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage! The 2014 show was bigger and better than ever and was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.

Congratulations to all the sudents, teachers, professional artists, industry partners, school communities and parents involved. Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage is proud to showcase some of the best young talent Queensland state schools has to offer!

Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage 2014 will be televised nationally on Network Ten on Saturday 6 December 2014 at 2.00pm.
